WIN: The Sapphires on DVD

Competition ends 25th March 2013

This musical-comedy ticks all the right boxes for a fun and lighthearted romp through 1960s Australia, following Chris O’Dowd and his four piece girl band as they set off to entertain the troops in Vietnam. No wonder it’s been dubbed the Australian version of Dreamgirls! And best of all, The Sapphires is out on DVD on 4th March, courtesy of E1.

The Sapphires centres around the lives of four Aboriginal girls, Cynthia, Gail, Julie and Kay, in 1968, a time of serious political upheaval Down Under. Indigenous Australians have been given the right to vote. Drugs are becoming a serious issue in Oz – and the troops are still over in Vietnam. In short, the world is in need of a little soul – so, when kindhearted talent scout Dave stumbles across the four sisters, they soon find their lives turned upside-down. In the best possible way. Cue their first proper gig as The Sapphires, a journey to Vientam to entertain the troops and more than a few opportunities to fall in love along the way…

“Country and western music is about loss. Soul music is also about loss. But the difference is in country and western music, they’ve lost, they’ve given up and they are just all wining about it. In soul music they are struggling to get it back, they haven’t given up.” Inspired by a true story, AThe Sapphires is a celebration of family, growing up, Aboriginal culture and, above all else, knee-tappingly good music.
