Adam Sandler leads Razzie nominations

Fresh from another year of pouring buckets of gluey shit across our screens, Adam ‘look what a big T-shirt I’ve got’ Sandler has finally been appropriately recognised for his unique contribution to cinema; he has been personally nominated for eleven Razzies, a new record for a single year.

In an unexpected break with tradition, this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards are being handed out on April Fools’ Day rather than during their traditional timeslot of ‘Oscar Eve’. However, Razzie organisers once more took advantage of the world’s press descending on Hollywood to announce the 2012 nominations the day before the 84th Academy Awards ceremony.

Sandler received two Worst Actor and one Worst Actress nominations (for Jack & Jill, Just Go With It and Jack & Jill again), an astonishing three nominations for Worst Screen Couple (with Jennifer Aniston or Brooklyn Decker in Just Go With It and Katie Holmes AND Al Pacino in Jack & Jill) and two Worst Screenplay nominations (for Jack & Jill and Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star). Jack & Jill also picked up nominations for Worst Screen Ensemble, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel and, simply, Worst Picture.

Even more impressively, the three films mentioned above (all of which were produced by Sandler’s company Happy Madison) picked up a joint total of twenty-four nominations. We think we might tattoo that on Adam Sandler’s cheek if we ever meet him, but until we get a chance we’re going to say that again: twenty-four nominations in one year for films that were essentially his fault.

Other heavy hitters included Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, which scored eight nominations each, and New Year’s Eve with five nominations. Nicolas Cage garnered three Worst Actor nominations (for Drive Angry, Season Of The Witch and Trespass), as well as a Worst Screen Couple nod for him and “anyone sharing the screen with him in his three 2011 movies”.

In other news, we’re very pleased to note that a total of four men were nominated for Worst Actress/Supporting Actress prizes – Sandler and David Spade for Jack & Jill, Martin Lawrence and Brandon T Jackson for Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. Ken Jeong also managed to be nominated for Worst Supporting Actor four times this year, which is going some even by Sandler’s standards.
